Macarons for Mom at Thierry

Thierry Chocolaterie Patisserie Cafe is offering a full Mother's Day Gift Basket this year priced at $59, but you can't go wrong if you only pick up one of their 12-pack gift box of macarons for $21.95.

The dainty French sugar bombs may be everywhere this year, but as far as Mom Day gifts go, macarons are not yet a cliché.  Plus if you go for the best quality, such as you will find at Thierry's, you'll still be spending far less that what you probably would for a comparable size box of chocolates.  Or for that matter, the 20-piece box of macarons that women secretly buy for themselves at Pierre Hermes in Paris at $83 Cdn a pop.

Macarons do seem to be a sure thing when it comes to making the ladies happy. Pastry Chef Thierry Busset says he sells approximately 2,000 macarons a day at his Alberni Street pastry shop and cafe - and that's on a slow shift. During this year's debut of Jour de Macaron Day, he sold somewhere near 3,500.

So...tap,tap,tap on the calculator... at $1.95 each, times 730,000 macarons a year, that would appear to be a good argument for jumping into the macaron business, non? However as Thierry reminds us, when they are well made, the ingredients are tres cher. Plus, he must employ three, full time dedicated pastry chefs just to turn out the 10+ different flavours offered at the shop each day.

So the cost should reflect all that.  And let's not forget, we're talking about Mom here.  How many cookies did she bake for you?
