Rainier Provisions opens in Gastown

From the press release.

Heather Hospitality Group’s new 102-seat delicatessen Rainier Provisions opens today in Vancouver’s historical heartland. The Rainier gives the nostalgic concept of ‘provisions’ an edgy makeover in this all-in-one airy eating establishment, specialty coffee shop and carefully-curated deli located on the ground floor of Gastown’s heritage Rainier Hotel.

An oversized deli counter showcases local artisan producers that Sean Heather has championed for years at Salt Tasting Room, and guests can now take these unique and hard to find products home to enjoy. Look for humanely-farmed charcuterie from East Vancouver’s Moccia Urbani; D-Original Sausage Company’s sustainable sausages, created by fifth generation, German sausage-maker Drews Driessen and his family; specialty UK cheeses from London-based Neal’s Yard Dairy; and J.Beethoven Corned Beef.

The deli features floor-to-ceiling shelves packed with hand-selected products including Italian olives, bottles of squid ink, Guinness mustard and quince paste. Olive-oil lovers can bring a reusable container to fill up from the 200-litre storefront barrel as a unique and environmentally-friendly way to enjoy authentic extra virgin olive oil.

The 102-seat dining room provides breakfast, lunch and dinner without line-ups thanks to the fast and flavourful option of a carvery, featuring a choice of roasted meats, sides such as mashed potatoes or polenta and gravy. Seafood pot pie, sausages of the day and pulled pork sandwiches are also on the menu, alongside vegetarian pasta and vegan chili. A dessert bar serves locally-made Earnest Ice Cream, ice cream sandwiches and Okanagan fruit crumble.

Guests can select from over 18 types of bourbon available at the bar. Six on-tap beers range from international brews: Kronenberg, Kronenberg Blanc and Grimbergen, to local and Canadian tipples Blood Alley Bitter, Steam Whistle Pilsner and Driftwood. The Rainier is proud to partner with Stumptown Coffee Roasters for its impressive coffee program featuring professionally trained baristas and a state-of-the-art La Marzocco Strada machine.

Rainier Provisions combines the energy of iconic New York delis, with a flavour of London’s neighborhood cafes and a pinch of Gastown’s signature historic style. The original 1907 mosaic floor has been restored, as have the oversized heritage windows that look out onto Carrall and West Cordova. Exposed original brick complements the feature wall, papered with reproductions of an 1880 Parisian seed catalogue, and retains the feel of an old-fashioned provisions store.

Sean Heather says, “After operating in this neighbourhood for 17 years, we are happy to find another way to contribute to the fabric of Gastown by providing a venue where locals can buy incredible goods and sit in for great eats and coffee.”

Rainier Provisions is currently open Monday to Saturday from 11:30 a.m. - 6 p.m. The Rainier will soon extend its hours to include breakfast and into the later evening, with plans to open a 40-seat patio this summer.
