Heart of Gastown goes No Car Zone for Weekends
Gassy Jack is going to be supervising a lot of eating action during the weekends. The immediate area around the iconic statue in Gastown's Maple Tree Square, between Water and Cordova streets (as well as a few offshoot streets and alleys), will be closed off to motor vehicle traffic every summer weekend from 10 p.m. on Fridays to late Sunday night. This will allow restaurants to take over the area, spilling their tables out beyond their current sidewalk allowance, and turning the entire square into one big, outdoor dining piazza. What with the arrival of new restaurants such as Cork and Fin and L'Abbatoir, in addition to already established restaurants on the square such as Vera's Burgers, Chill Winston and the Irish Heather, the area was already turning into a restaurant row for Gastown. This new street takeover will make that even more so, as restaurants that currently do not even offer a patio, such as Salt and Judas Goat (tucked away on Blood Alley), will now be able to do so. Apparently the city has long wanted to make Gastown more of a "people zone", and as the Gastown Farmers Market will not be taking place this summer, that cleared the area for other experiments in public use. The new zoning will also be in effect on legal holidays. |
