SPRING: Thomas Haas Eggs You OnEgg above by Geoseph Domenichiello, below by Steven Hodge.
One of the joys of spring in Vancouver is encountering one of the two-foot tall chocolate Easter Egg sculptures magically conjured by local chocolatier Thomas Haas and his pastry team. The sheer artistry of their design makes you want to wiggle your nose and hop with delight.
What makes these creations even more exciting is that you don't have to just gawk at them, you can bid on a chance to own (or even eat!) one too. Thomas Haas Fine Chocolates & Patisserie will be giving away four giant eggs to the winners of their 7th Annual Easter Egg Raffle - 100% of the proceeds from which will be generously donated to the Union Gospel Mission in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, as well as the North Shore Women's Centre.
BUT ... are you chocoholic enough to tackle one? Depending on the design, each centerpiece contains 30 to 50 lbs of chocolate, and takes Pastry Chefs Steven Hodge and Geoseph Domenichiello approximately 20 hours to build.
After all that work, do they ever shatter near the moment of completion, a la the film Kings of Pastry?
"It hasn't happened ... yet", says Haas spokesperson Kathrin Best. "One person can usually move one by himself, although everyone is extremely careful. The real risk is when the egg is transported from the kitchen to its show location. If there is a time where it's appropriate to be nervous, that's it."
The chocolate egg centerpieces will be on display just before Easter at the two Thomas Haas Fine Chocolates & Patisserie locations at:128-998 Harbourside Drive, North Vancouver, 604-924-1847, and 2539 West Broadway Vancouver. 604-736-1848. Raffle tickets are $5 each. Draw date is Friday, April 6th at 2 p.m., at both stores.
Getting them home in one piece is your sweet dilemma.
