BOULEVARD KITCHEN & OYSTER BAR will be adding a Sunday Pig Roast Series to the menu in its private dining room this fall. Beginning Sunday, Oct. 4 and continuing each Sunday throughout October and November, Boulevard will welcome a limited number of guests to belly up to the banquet table as Executive Chef Alex Chen and his team carve up a local Sloping Hill Farm roasted pig, served family-style with an impressive array of seasonal fixings. $59 per person. Tickets are limited to just 42 per event, and available online.

Tonight is the official opening of ANCORA, the latest restaurant to move into the False Creek location long occupied by C restaurant, and before that Starfish. Inspired by Executive Chef Ricardo Valverde's Peruvian origins, Ancora's menu will offer West Coast cuisine with South American and Japanese influences. Andrea Vescovi is general manager and wine director, and joining him as Restaurant Director is Tara Thom. In addition, a raw bar is headed by Master Sushi Chef Yoshi Tabo, along with a spirits program led by Head Bartender Matt Cooke.

The final round of the 2015 HAWKSWORTH YOUNG CHEF SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION takes place this Saturday (September 12) when 8 young Canadian chefs will compete for a $10,000 grand prize at Vancouver Community College. The panel of judges includes chefs Anthony Walsh, Kristian Eligh, Mark McEwan, Scott Jaeger and Normand Laprise as well as journalists Alexandra Gill, Jacob Richler and Susan Musgrave. The winner will be announced Saturday afternoon.

TOPTABLE GROUP has revealed a few details about their new Whistler properties, scheduled to open this fall. The venue will see a dual concept named ‘Bar Oso’ (Spanish for 'bear') and ‘The Cellar by Araxi’. These spaces, designed by Box Interior, will be an extension to Araxi Restaurant. Bar Oso, located Village Stroll level, will open daily to serve sharing plates, cocktails, and approachable wines. While on the lower lever, The Cellar by Araxi will allow Araxi to extend its private dining and meeting space options. Read complete release here.

THE IRISH HEATHER has brought back its popular 'Long Table Series' and the next date is Sept 21st. For just $18 per person (plus taxes and gratuities), this local tradition gathers upwards of 50 diners at its 40-foot-long communal table to mix, mingle and share their appreciation of classic comfort dishes (think roasted steel head trout with lemon and dill risotto), and well-brewed beers. Each month the series will showcase a different brewery ( first up, Russell Brewing Co.) New: platters of bread, meats, and cheeses served family style to share. 7 p.m. Reservations.

HY'S STEAKHOUSE & COCKTAIL BAR turns 60 this year and to honour their diamond anniversary they are inviting Hy’s fans across Canada to enter a contest to win one of six $1,500 Hy’s celebrations. Entering is as easy as posting to Instagram, Twitter or Facebook stating what you would like to celebrate with the hashtag #CelebratewithHys. The full contest announcement is on the Hy's website. Also, watch for news of the soon-to-be-completed renovations upstairs at Hy’s in Vancouver. They're aiming for an early October opening.



As of this fall, master drink master JAY JONES will be joining the team at Vancouver restaurant, Vij’s, where he will be working closely with Mike Bernardo and Vikram Vij. As you may know, Vij’s will be moving to its new Cambie & 15th street location soon. Says Jones, "Not only will the restaurant grow in size, but so too will the beverage experience we can create for our guests ... [cocktails] that will be built on a foundation of classic design, and created with the authentic aromas and flavours of Vij’s signature hand-sifted and roasted spices." 

LYNN CRAWFORD, Chef-Owner of Ruby Watchco in Toronto, Star of Pitchin' In and Chopped Canada on Food Network Canada and The Cooking Channel will be feted by the BC Chapter of Les Dames d' Escoffier via a gala dinner at the Four Seasons this October 17th. Over 100 guests will be seated at one long table in the hotel's private dining room for the dinner that will be catered by several top Canadian Chefs. TOP DROP VANCOUVER, an event which brings together terroir-focused wineries, craft breweries, cideries and local gastronomy takes place this week (September 10 and 11th). It's the second time out for the event and this year it takes place at the Roundhouse Mews in Yaletown. See the new calendar listings below for more details and links.
