RESTAURANT/FOOD NEWS

Uwe Bols' much talked about new Gastown restaurant, BAUHAUS, officially commenced business this past Victoria Day weekend. Located in the original Boneta space and boasting a Michelin-starred chef from Berlin in Stefan Hartmann, the new restaurant has been branded both "Euro pretentious" and "Vancouver's new 'Best Restaurant'", and all this before the ovens were even installed. Says the movie director-turned-restaurateur Bols, "Go big or forget it." Best to check it out at One West Cordova street and judge for yourself.

DRINK NEWS

After 23 years as Chief Winemaker for MISSION HILL FAMILY ESTATE, John Simes is changing hats to focus on the von Mandl family’s diverse vineyards in the Okanagan (including the CedarCreek Estate Winery vineyards acquired in 2014). Over the next several months, starting with the 2015 harvest, Simes' shoes as winemaker for VMF Estates will be filled by Australian- born Darryl Brooker, former winemaker for CedarCreek. Simes will complete all final blending for the 2014 vintage and remain a key resource to Brooker during the transition.

BLUE GROUSE ESTATE WINERY invites the public to attend the grand opening of their new tasting room and winery facility in Vancouver Island's Cowichan Valley on Saturday, May 23. A man who works with fruit from nearly 40-year-old vines, Winemaker Bailey Williamson will be in attendance to showcase the latest vintages from the historic estate. Real food we love...DICKIE'S GINGER is a local Vancouver ginger beer company that uses only real ginger, cane sugar and fresh lemons in its stripped down version of bottled ginger beer. Hooray! No extracts or artificial flavours, just lots of natural 'bite'. Bel Cafe now stocks it and so do Boulevard Kitchen & Oyster Bar and Rocanini Coffee Roasters, plus these other establishments.
