It won't just be trees looking spectacular during Vancouver's 10th Annual CHERRY BLOSSOM FESTIVAL (April 2-29). Be sure to check out the 'Cherry Blossom' sushi rolls - incorporating cherry blossoms and cherry blossom salt - that will be available at Miku and Minami Japanese restaurants thoughout April. Cue the bouzouki. March 27 is the official opening day for THE GREEK BY ANATOLI, a new Yaletown restaurant that will specialize in dishes inspired by, you guessed it, traditional Greek cooking. Launched in North Vancouver in 1984 as Anatoli Souvlaki by Helen and Thomas Anatoli, the new incarnation of the restaurant by sons Alexi and Iani promises to bring Greek cuisine to a whole new level. Greek waffles, anyone? Look for it at 1043 Mainland Street.
The new owners of the LIBERTY BAKERY have refreshed the premises at 3699 Main Street and have been conducting soft re-opening runs throughout March. Yes, the cafe and bakery will be open this weekend (Friday through Sunday, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m). Formerly one of our favourite pit stops after shopping the Winter Farmer's market, we'll be looking forward to taking tea at the Liberty with their new pastry menu and Brown Betty teapots. We hear the grilled cheese sandwiches aren't bad either.
ROOTS + FRUITS a "responsibly sourced Cafe + Cold Pressed Juice Bar" has announced its imminent arrival at 848 Powell St (in the Strathcona neighbourhood). No menus have been revealed yet, however their social media promises a mandate centered on healthy living and "fuelling your body with the food it needs to perform to its highest ability". Better dust off your gym bag and check the state of your lycra .
Will there be weenie water soup? Not that you'd expect a hot dog place to be serious but it looks like we can look forward to a few surprises at the new comic book-bright, retro-look cafe opening soon in the Hastings-Sunrise hood next month. WHAT'S UP? HOT DOG will debut at 2481 East Hastings St in the old Master Chef restaurant space.
The votes were cast, all 33,759 of them, and the 'Diner's Choice Awards' in the 7th Annual VANCOUVER CHINESE RESTAURANT AWARDS have now been posted. Look for the Critics Choice Awards and the Food Bloggers Choice Awards to be made available on April 15.
Come April, JAMES OLBERG will be the new Executive Chef for COAST restaurant. The appointment marks Olberg's return to the Glowbal Group fold. From 2003-2007 he was the Exec Chef of the original Glowbal Grill and manager of GRG's catering division. A seasoned culinary competitor, Olberg will represent Canada in the 2017 Bocuse d'Or in Lyon, France. As for current COAST chef Pedro Gonzalez, he will lead the kitchen brigade at the new Glowbal Grill, opening this summer at Telus Garden.
Fun while it lasted? Apparently VIKRAM VIJ is leaving the Dragons' Den television show on CBC to concentrate on opening his new Vij’s restaurant on Cambie Street. Carolyn Ali of the Georgia Straight has the story here.
The 16th Annual HEALTHY CHEF COMPETITION takes place at 6:30 tonight (Wednesday, March 25th) in the Hyatt Regency Hotel's Regency Ballroom. Tickets are $90 and include dinner, entertainment and a gift bag of healthy products and coupons. Purchase tickets via a downloadable form, or by phoning. 604-944-0179. The competition is produced by the BC Produce Marketing Association and the BC Chefs Association.
DOGWOOD BREWING, Vancouver's first organic brewery opened this week, well ahead of its announced April debut. Brewmaster Claire Wilson crafts full flavoured beer using organic hops from Lillooet and Gambrinus organic malt and sells them in kegs, casks, cans and growlers. Try their Honey Ale, IPA, Stout and Martzen-style Organic Fest in local bars, restaurants and liquor stores. Or hit the new tasting room at 8284 Sherbrook Street.
Also jumping their own starting gun is BRU EATERY in Mount Pleasant. (That's Big Rock Urban Eatery.) The new space with its open dining room, entertainment stage, and a floor-to-ceiling glass wall that looks into the brewery is the second operation for the Calgary-based company known for its limited-edition, small-batch brews. Check out their dedicated retail area with growler fills, tasting taps and off sales. There is also free parking for 20 plus vehicles, a bike rack and an EV charging station. 310 West 4th Avenue (and Alberta St.), Vancouver.
The Estell family of Abottsford evolved from farmers to winery owners when they opened SINGLETREE WINERY. However, the winery's name and its bottle labels reflect their agricultural roots. Commonly used in the late 1800s, the single harness yoke, known as "the singletree", was an essential tool for pioneering farmers who used horses to clear the land around the Mt. Lehman area. Their inaugural releases include Siegerrebe, a blended Farmhand White, and a Pinot Noir. Visit their tasting room in the Fraser Valley, open on weekends.
THE PROJECTION ROOM is Fox Cabaret's new cocktail and snack bar. Located in an upstairs area that was once the projection booth of the former Fox Theatre (Canada's last 35mm adult movie house), early evenings in the Room will function as a casual neighbourhood spot to discover playful new cocktails, local microbrews, and an assortment of bar snacks. Late nights and weekends the space will play host to DJs and parties in conjunction with programming downstairs, or as stand alone events. Open 7 days a week from 5 p.m.
