RESTAURANT/FOOD NEWS




Per today's press release...Patrick Corsi has just announced that his BACCANO OSTERIA-BAR will open this July at 1889 West 1st Avenue in Vancouver. The space (with patio!)was vacated by Smoking Dog Bistro last year. A complete overhaul is currently underway and the osteria will bear no resemblance in concept or design to Corsi’s former restaurants (Q4 and Q4 Centro). Corsi has been instrumental in the development of Baccano and will serve at the restaurant as Acting Managing Partner.   Follow along until opening day @BaccanoLife.



In honour of the 10th Anniversary of Ocean Wise, each Toptable Group restaurant will feature BC seafood products throughout the summer. Look for prix fixe seafood menus offered at West and Araxi, as well as two special events. On June 23rd, West will host a 6-course dinner prepared by Chefs Quang Dang and Robert Clark. Tickets are $125 with proceeds to Ocean Wise. And on June 30th, CinCin Ristorante will host ‘Table on the Terrace’, a 40-guest table presented on the restaurant’s outdoor terrace. A few weeks back we discussed the opening of GRAPES AND SODA on West 6th Ave - the winebar featuring natural, organic and biodynamic wines that is the new extension of Farmer's Apprentice restaurant. For more details, here's the official press release with all the who's whos.






WESTERN LIVING and VANCOUVER magazines have been sold to the owners of Yellow Pages. The two Vancouver-based magazines were not included in the recent $55.5 million deal wherein former owner, TC Media, recently sold off its other consumer magazine properties to the TVA Group (Quebecor). Under the new management the two magazines will continue to publish, with TC Printing getting the print order as a condition of sale.



If you are vegetarian and a fan of THE PARKER, better get down to the Chinatown restaurant before June 13th. After that date the restaurant will briefly close for a re-think and then re-open sometime later to offer a new casual dining concept that will include a few meat/protein dishes on the menu. The owners promise however, that favourite Parker dishes will remain. More on this later.





RAILTOWN CAFE will host five streetside Tailgate Barbecue events at their cafe on select Saturdays this summer. Kicking off June 6 (with additional dates scheduled for July 4, Aug. 8, Sept. 12 and Sept. 26), Railtown Cafe Chefs and Co-owners Dan Olson and Tyler Day will fire up their 12-foot smoker/barbecue barrel from 4 - 10 p.m. to dish up plates of slow-smoked brisket, pork shoulder, beer-brined chicken and sausage, as well as a choice of side dishes. Priced at $16 per person, with a vegetarian option for $10 per person. See menus and more details here.



Cooking classes at WILD RICE are continuing through the summer with Chef Todd teaching the joys of preparing healthy Chinese-influenced fare from scratch. All classes start at 6 p.m. sharp. The $55 price includes a demonstration class plus a four-course dinner you help to prepare. Owner Andrew Wong will also craft an optional wine, beer or cocktail pairing to complement your dinner. Pre-registration is required. Schedule: June 30 – Beef, July 28 – Uniquely New West, August 25 – Gluten-free, September 29 – Oceanwise Seafood.


On June 4th MEAL SHARE will launch a partnership with 11 local restaurants (including Farmer's Apprentice, The Acorn, Craft Beer Market, and Brix). What is mealshare? It's a Vancouver-based non-profit run by three young entrepreneurs who hope to change the world for the better. Buy a Mealshare branded menu item at a partner restaurant, and they provide a meal to someone in need. It’s that simple! Buy one, give one. Meals are donated locally through Mission Possible without any added cost to the customer.



 The Renaissance Vancouver Harbourfront Hotel has relaunched as PINNACLE HOTEL VANCOUVER HARBOURFRONT.  Owners Pinnacle International purchased the 442-room property back in 2007 but the name change was only made now in the interest of expanding the Pinnacle Hotel Brand. Earlier this year, renovations to the property's meeting and event spaces were started, with completion expected this summer. Upgrades to the hotel's p2b restaurant, slated for this fall, include kitchen updates and renovations to the dining area.



DRINK NEWS



We've been waiting for RED TRUCK BEER to open its new brewery and 100-seat plus diner at 295 East 1st Avenue since Easter, and today's the day. Sounds like a visit to the facility with its growler station and two dozen beer-on-tap bar could make for a full day of entertainment - eat, drink and take a tour, but not necessarily in that order.  Look for summer music concerts at this venue as well.
     



Vancouverites are invited to taste Southern France as PROVENCE WINES take over select BC Liquor Stores this June. On Saturday, June 6th those who take a stroll to the 39th and Cambie BC Liquor Store will experience the 'Shades of Rosé' when eight different rosés from the region are showcased.  This event is free and open to all of legal drinking age. 2 - 6 p.m. At 5555 Cambie St, Vancouver.





Don't forget that June 1 - 7 is NEGRONI WEEK. Bartenders about town will be offering specials in aid of charity. Siena restaurant, for example will make a $1 dollar donation to BC Children's Hospital for every grappa negroni cocktail sold.







CHEFS



Change of guard ... JEFFERSON ALVAREZ is no longer heading the kitchen at Secret Location restaurant in Gastown, and has moved on to other projects. His last day was May 30th. Taking his place will be Chef Montgomery Lau (formerly Chef de Cuisine at Market by Jean-Georges).
