As reported by the new TAP & BARREL restaurant in North Vancouver will be the largest restaurant in Western Canada. The 14,000 square foot restaurant, a third location for Tap & Barrel, opened yesterday (July 28th) on a North Van waterfront location adjacent to the Lonsdale Quay in a repurposed 100-year-old building known as "The Shipyards". Also opening yesterday was HUBBUB Sandwiches and Salads' newest location at 2325 Cambie Street (and Broadway). As in its other two locations, the shop serves healthy sandwiches and salads made to order with weekly specials and a rotating lineup of healthy sidekicks and soups. Spread over two floors, the new Cambie shop’s interior was designed by local company Evoke International Design, and features natural wood surfaces and long communal tables. The top floor houses the concept kitchen, where recipes are developed by chef Erin Holm.

A fun-filled, wine and dine weekend in the Okanagan awaits a winning bidder during BC Chapter of Les Dames d’Escoffier SUMMERDINE AUCTION. The online auction went live today (July 29th) at 7 a.m. and will close at 11:59 p.m. on August 12 (the evening of Les Dames' fundraiser Summerdine). VANCOUVER FARMERS MARKET - the non-profit society that organized the city’s first open air farmers market on July 29, 1995 - will celebrate its 20th birthday today at Main Street Station Market with an official “Vancouver Farmers Markets Day” proclamation from the City. Deputy Mayor Andrea Reimer will be on hand to present the plaque and read the proclamation at 3:30 p.m. Other 20th birthday festivities include free coffee and donuts for shoppers, compliments of Cartems Donuterie and Salt Spring Coffee.


EARTHBITES is a brand new cooking class series with 100% of net proceeds donated to EarthBites' school garden and nutrition program for children. First up is Chef Chris Whittaker of Forage restaurant who will instruct you on how to find, prepare and eat all things foraged: stinging nettles, miner’s lettuce, fiddleheads, mushrooms, wild game, even weeds.  See details for the class in the new calendar listings below.

For the month of August, Provence Marinaside in Yaletown and Provence Mediterranean Grill in Point Grey will celebrate all things tomato with their Sixth Annual Tomato Festival – featuring special three-course prix fixe menus (along with wine pairings) that will satisfy even the most addicted tomato-holic. Each of the two restaurants have a completely different menu and price. Full menus for both locations can be viewed and reservations made on Provence’s website.*

* Pride Bonus - To add to the celebration of diversity and the LGBT community in Vancouver, Provence Wines is hosting three FREE Provence Rosé tastings on August 2nd from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

FRESHII, the fast/casual, fresh food franchise with its "Buddha Bowls" and "Warrior" plates will open its 3rd location in Vancouver at 2920 Virtual Way in the Broadway Tech Centre. This health food concept that opened its first Canadian outlet in Toronto in 2005, now has restaurants in more than 70 cities and 13 countries and claims to cater to every dietary and taste preference. Says location owner Mike Mannan "Freshii is on a global mission to help individuals live longer and healthier lives by making fresh food convenient and affordable to all.


Wine book author and columnist, JOHN SCHREINER has been selected as the 2015 recipient of the Canadian Wine Industry Champion Award. The award is presented each year to a person (or organization) who has provided exemplary support for the Canadian wine industry and significantly contributed to its overall strength and long-term viability. Well, that's John, for sure! Champions are nominated by members of the Canadian wine industry and selected by a national industry committee. Good Choice!


Executive Chef JAMES WALT of Araxi Restaurant has just released his menu for the first event in the Araxi Longtable Dinner series. See it here. Taking place on Monday, August 3rd, the 200-plus seat table will be dramatically positioned at Vancouver’s Vanier Park. Chef Walt will be joined by his Vancouver-based TopTable Group bros, chefs Frank Pabst, Andrew Richardson, Quang Dang and Thierry Busset while wine pairings will be provided by sommelier Samantha Rahn.


Each day in August a different IPA will be tapped at a Donnelly Group pub across Vancouver. The 30 DAYS OF IPA kicks off Aug 1 at The Lamplighter in Gastown, where a keg of Immortal IPA from Seattle’s legendary Elysian Brewing will be tapped; the first of 30 unique IPAs from craft breweries across North America, many of them new to BC. Vancouver's first GIN-A-PALOOZA arrives in the city on August 12 and runs until August 25, with a grand wrap up party taking place at Blacktail Restaurant & Lounge on the 26th. During the two-week festival the public is invited to pick up a 'G-pass' at any of the participating vendors, then enjoy any of the 30+ gin cocktails being featured at these establishments while entering to win prizes. During the month of August, WINES FROM ARGENTINA will be highlighted at 60 select BC Liquor Stores throughout the province. One of the highlights will be free consumer tastings at the 39th & Cambie Signature Store on Thursday, August 13 and Friday, August 14, 2015 (2:30  to 6:30 p.m.). The wines will be complemented by traditional empanadas prepared by Panaderia Latina Bakery.

Visiting wineries in the Okanagan may be fun and interesting for you, but all the while your dog is thinking "what's in this for me?". OKANAGAN CRUSH PAD happen to be fond of dogs (they own a few themselves), so they have been stepping up efforts to make your pooch welcome and comfortable while you visit and sample the wines. There is plenty of leash-up areas in the shade with fresh, cool water, and dogs are welcome in restricted areas of the winery, provided their manners are impeccable. Doggonit, considering the heat this summer, that's arf-ly kind of them.

In celebration of Vancouver Pride, LUCKY'S DOUGHNUT has teamed with A LOVING SPOONFUL to create a $5 “Sprinkled with Pride” charity doughnut - a vanilla cream-filled "Long John” with a chocolate glaze covered in a rainbow of sprinkles to represent the flag of the LGBTQ community. The limited-run doughnut will be available on Aug 2 at both Lucky's Doughnut locations and at a Pride Parade spot near 958 Denman street from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. All proceed will benefit A Loving Spoonful's meal programs for people living with HIV/AIDS.
