RESTAURANT/HOTEL/FOOD NEWS

The Columbia StrEAT Food Truck Fest is back this Saturday (Aug 22nd), presented by the Downtown New Westminster Business Association! It is now the biggest one day food truck festival in Canada, with over 70 trucks. See the list of trucks here. Located all along Columbia Street, this food truck festival is certainly one-of-a-kind. Easily accessible by transit, it is steps away from Columbia Skytrain Station and New Westminster Skytrain Station.

Plenty of Chef Angus An fans have been checking out his third and newest restaurant, FAT MAO (lucky cat), in advance. But today is the day it officially opens to the public. Located at 217 East Georgia Street in Chinatown, the new venture focuses on flavourful noodle dishes inspired by Asian cuisines that An has experienced growing up at home and in his travels. The casual 25-seater is open for lunch and dinner Wed to Sun from 11 a.m., then it closes when the noodles run out, or 10 p.m. — whichever comes first. Dishes are affordably priced under $12.

Also opening for An's growing empire this month is FREEBIRD CHICKEN SHACK, a brand new chicken rotisserie at New Westminster’s River Market. A spin off from An's 2nd restaurant, Longtail Kitchen (also at the River market), Freebird is currently under construction and will be selling Asian-inspired roast chicken and side dishes in the former crepe shop soon.

It's the 25th Anniversary of CINCIN RISTORANTE on Robson Street, and to celebrate the milestone, Executive Chef Andrew Richardson has created a special menu that will mix CinCin classics with contemporary twists, including wood-fired dishes from chef’s Grillworks Infierno. Priced at $79 (plus tax and tip), the 4-course menu will be featured at the restaurant from Sept 11th to Oct 5th. Look for antipasti and pasta starters leading up to a wood-grilled tenderloin of beef with ash-roasted onions and salmoriglio. Followed by tiramisu. Make reservations here.

Vancouver's GARLIC FESTIVAL is back for its 7th year, and this time they've teamed up with local chefs to bring back 'CHEFS TO THE FIELD", the ultra fun cooking competition where chefs must run out to the gardens to pick their own produce before racing back to begin their cooking prep at outdoor kitchen stations. The crowd gets to cheer on their favourite chef and help judge the results. Funds for this event support Richmond Schoolyard Society, The Sharing Farm and Richmond Food Bank.

Last May, 10,000 people gathered at Grandview Park for the first COMMERCIAL DRIVE STREET PARTY. Attendees listened to speakers, heard local bands, and enjoyed free hot dogs and drinks at a BBQ potluck. When night fell, thousands took to the streets and danced until the early hours of the morning. The 2nd Commercial Dr. Street Party takes place this Fri (Aug 21st) and everyone is welcome to bring their own sound, food, whatever. Warning this is an unregulated party and not entirely welcomed by the local residents and merchants.  More details here.

PEOPLE

Les Amis du Fromage recently announced that after 30 years, the cheese shop's founder, ALICE SPURRELL, would be taking a well-earned retirement and handing over the reins to her daughter Allison Spurrell as company president. In response, food and wine writer Tim Pawsey penned a lovely tribute to Spurrell and what she has brought (and brings) to the Vancouver food community. You can read it here at hiredbelly.com. Personally, we will miss having the opportunity to chat with Alice whenever we drop by her amazing Hastings Street cheese emporium.

Internationally famous chef MICHEL ROUX will be in Vancouver this fall for two events produced by Barbara-Jo's Books to Cooks. On October 14th he will pair with Chef Ernst Dorfler at the Five Sails Restaurant to prepare a menu from his new book The Essence of French Cooking. The next day, he will sign books and be interviewed live in the bookshop by CBC's Sheryl Mackay for her North by Northwest radio show. Click here for more details and information on how to reserve your seat.

After taking the long road and often complicated road to organic certification, Chrstine Coletta and Steve Lornie have finally achieved official organic certification for their Switchback Vineyard at OKANAGAN CRUSH PAD in Summerland. Here's the story of how it all came about for OCP from the day they first unveiled their concrete fermenting eggs. Karl Kliparchuck also has his personal take on the story in his blog MyWinePal.com .
