The Italian Mama Gets Her Due

Recipes and Dreams From An Italian Life
by Tessa Kiros,
Appetite by Random House, 2013, $34.95

An Italian man is not old enough to get married until his mother dies.

That's a joke of course, but here the 'truth in jest' theory may apply. Both Italian sons and daughters are noted for being devoted to their mothers. We know plenty of sophisticated urban business people in Italy, who when the mid-day eating hour arrives, grab a car, taxi, subway, limo, whatever, to hoof it back to Mama's house for lunch. And who do so nearly every day, often with significant others, love interests or orphaned co-workers in tow. After all, Mama's kitchen really is the best restaurant in town, and every child knows it.
