Hy's Encore Turns 50

It’s not every day that a Vancouver restaurant turns 50, especially an icon like Hy’s Encore that can boast long ties to our city's business, media and social worlds. After five decades, it's even rarer for a restaurant to still be operating at its original location.

Launched in 1962 at 637 Hornby Street by the larger-than-life, cigar-chomping Hy Aisenstat, and still owned and run by the Aisenstat family, Hy’s Encore has offered generations of Vancouverites a sense of roots and continuity, even as dining trends have come and gone, and Vancouver itself has changed around it.
