The Refinery - A Preview
![]() THE REFINERY IS NOW OPEN (Edited from the press release.) Ryan Newman, Raymond Staniscia and Peter Raptis have announced the opening of The Refinery, a new, market fresh, charcuterie-based restaurant and wine bar in the heart of Vancouver's entertainment district at 1115 Granville Street. Concentrating on artisan cured meats, pates, terrines, cheeses, seafood dishes and sharing platters, Chef Michael Carter also gives a nod to Ray and Peter’s European backgrounds with his antipasto and tapas plates. A revolving selection of warm items are also seasonal and market driven. The bar offers a large selection of wine by the glass, Champagne and bubble by the bottle, and classic and original cocktails, along with bottled craft beers. With the goal of maintaining a sustainable friendly wine list featuring regional products and organic selections, The Refinery partners plan on keeping at least 50 percent of the wine list stocked with selections from British Columbia. From the use of reclaimed wood to energy efficient lighting, the interior of The Refinery was planned with environmental concerns in mind, and designed by two specialists in eco-design, Marilou Rudakewich and May Cheng of M Studio (Their company counts restaurants such as Hapa Izakaya, Paramount Earl's Restaurant and Whistler's Mountain Club among their clients.) Only non-toxic building supplies were used throughout the building, incoming water is filtered, and recycling systems have been built into the kitchen. Even The soft tread of cork floors and wood ceiling works to reduce the ambient noise which is typical of a busy working restaurant. The end result is a room that feels warm and welcoming, yet with environmental measures so effective, even the air has a fresh and woody fragrance. The chosen art work throughout the room is both thought provoking and playful (look for some familiar faces in the black and white wallpaper along the south wall). For the three managing partners (who also own SIP resto-lounge), The Refinery is a departure from what they have done in the past, and it is definitely unique for the Granville Street area. Their aim is to make the restaurant appealing to the people who live and work in the neighbourhood, not just those who only visit. With the street redesign project now begun, Granville Street may very well become one of the most beautiful and lively streets in all of Canada -- a true dining and entertainment destination spot with a world class ambience.
