Ethical Bean Express Opens to SkyTrain Riders on Earth Day.

Ethical Bean Xpress, a freestanding carbon neutral café, will open on Earth Day, April 22nd, at the Commercial Drive SkyTrain station. The platform level coffee bar is an offshoot from Vancouver based coffee roaster Ethical Bean, which provides fair trade certified organic coffee to cafés and grocery stores in the lower mainland and across Canada. A second Ethical Bean Xpress is slated to open on the Granville Street SkyTrain platform in June.

Ethical Bean Xpress will operate as 100% fair trade, organic and carbon neutral. In order to do this, Ethical Bean Xpress will only use compostable to-go cups and biodegradable cutlery. Bags and serviettes used for the Uprising Breads pastries served will be made from recycled materials and will also be biodegradable. To offset the pollution caused by transporting goods to the location and the energy used to operate the café, Ethical Bean has purchased carbon credits from Plug into Green Canada. No detail has been overlooked, even sugar and the chocolate used for making mochas will be fair trade and organic. Combine all this with Ethical Bean’s fair trade certified organic coffee, and you have the one of the most eco-conscious cups of java in the city.

Lloyd Berhardt, co-founder of Ethical Bean, sees the new Ethical Bean Xpress as a way to bring awareness to the thousands of riders who pass through the station each day. “We really wanted to bring to the SkyTrain riders in every way an environmentally sound choice for their morning or afternoon cup of coffee or tea,” says Bernhardt. Ethical Bean Xpress will open on April 22nd, and will be located on the concourse level of the Commercial Drive SkyTrain platform. The café will be open from 6:00 am to evening, seven days a week.
