The Great Pumpkin Watch

Our first nomination in the Great Pumpkin Watch is:

Peter Fong's Rhum et Citrouille Epicee
GANACHE Patisserie, 1262 Homer St., (Yaletown) Vancouver

"Rhum et Citrouille Épicée ($5.50) is pumpkin pie taken to another level, as a smooth pumpkin flan sits on a layer of spiced pumpkin cake and a crispy gingerbread cookie bottom while rum-macerated raisins and cranberries rest on top."

JOIN THE SEARCH FOR THE GREAT PUMPKIN

Every year on Halloween night, the Great Pumpkin
rises out of the most sincere pumpkin patch to bring toys to all the children of the world. –- Linus van Pelt

We were never sure what lesson was supposed to be learned by the saga of Linus and his lonely and fruitless vigil every Halloween in the pumpkin patch, waiting for the arrival of a Great Pumpkin that never came. Perhaps it was the rewards of choosing hope over experience, or the drawbacks of belonging to a religious cult of one. Don’t you just figure he grew up to be the kind of adult spending long and equally lonely nights at the office, burning the midnight oil, only to be passed over for Project Manager and the big, fat raise.

Oh, Rats!…we couldn’t help rooting for the little guy…and what is more, we suspect he was right, that there really is a Great Pumpkin out there. And this year, in honour of Linus, we think we should all try to track it down.

Whether it be found in a traditional pie, stirred into a fragrant risotto at your favourite Italian restaurant or slipped into one of Greg Hook’s organic chocolates at Chocolate Arts, we know that the mighty squash is living some special incarnation and only waiting to be recognized for all its marvelous virtures.

So diners, shoppers, chefs, store owners, if you think you know where the Great Pumpkin may be hiding, send us an email at contact@cityfood.com (pictures are good too) and put “pumpkin project in the title bar. This way we can draw up a list of the best pumpkin, or pumpkin flavoured, dishes in town.

We wish we could join you on your trick or treating, but alas, we can’t. Because you see, we have to stay right here…waiting...just in case.
