First Official News of the Cascade Room

Keep Calm & Carry On.

So says the message on the front wall at the entrance of The Cascade Room.
In light of the City Hall strike and construction delays, this may well be sage advice.
The message is taken from the WWII poster aimed at keeping the British masses
calm in the advent of a German invasion, and sets the tone for The Cascade Room's
nod to the British Pub.

Welcome to The Cascade Room.
(Directly from the press release.)

We are pleased to announce the "imminent" opening of The Cascade Room.

Who are we? You may know of a little spot on Main Street called Habit! Due to the overwhelming response from the neighbourhood we have decided to venture forth with a new restaurant concept (third if you include Tangerine, 1999 - 2005).

The Cascade Room is located at 2616 Main Street, next door to Habit, and consists of the same ownership group of Nigel Pike, Wendy Nicolay, David Nicolay and Robert Edmonds. This time we have brought along some friends. Managing the bar will be Vancouver Magazine's current "Bartender of the Year", Nick Devine, while in the kitchen Travis Williams, previously of Blue Water Restaurant and Adesso will be preparing the food.

Why Cascade?

When deciding on a name for the restaurant we wanted something that acknowledged our Main Street neighbourhood and had a sense of old fashioned grandeur to it. One of the first breweries in Vancouver was located near the Main Street and Broadway intersection, along what was once Brewery Creek. One of their flagship brews was "Cascade The Beer without Peer". We believe the name "The Cascade Room" will be an appreciated homage to the area and provides a timeless moniker.

The Menu

The food philosophy for any professional chef is paramount. According to Travis, what he has for The Cascade Room is "simple, honest food at good value". "Our intention as a kitchen crew is to produce a menu from wholesome, quality ingredients for the enjoyment of our patrons. From wild seafood products that follow the Ocean Wise mandate, to "in house" pizza doughs and al dente pasta, we will be striving to purchase our products from BC based suppliers, in particular from the Mount Pleasant area, continuing our commitment to the neighbourhood".

The Drinks

The Cascade Room will feature an aggressive cocktail program by Nick Devine, steeped in tradition rather than trend. Having worked in Vancouver, San Francisco and London (including a stint in Oxford with Cascade co-owner Nigel Pike), Nick was recently recognised as Vancouver's "Bartender of the Year". Nick's philosophy can be summed up as follows; "Whatever you desire, whether it’s a rickey, a daisy, a julep, a sling, a sour, a flip, a toddy or a nog... we’ll endeavour to make it".

The Room

The Cascade Room is the latest design by Evoke International Design. Characteristic of the work of Evoke, the space unites the organic, in terms of materials, with the minimal, in terms of furnishings, for an overall ambience in which lighting and graphics are key. The main entrance is flanked by two large overhead glass doors that will open up the front lounge space and the patrons to the street. Inside, the room is dominated by a 24' long bar, connecting the raised dining areas near the front to the semi-private dining lounge toward the kitchen. Dark woods and built-in furnishings create a casual, yet intimate, experience regardless of the time of day. The back dining lounge provides a punch of warm colour, drawing customers deeper into the room for longer stays.
The overall theme is a subtle nod to the British Pub. Our hope is that The Cascade Room will further enhance the Main Street neighbourhood as a vibrant dining destination.
