BURNABY'S EMPTY BOWLS PROJECT FIGHTS HUNGER AT FUNDRAISING EVENT
(Directly from the Press Release)

(Vancouver, BC) – On the evening of Tuesday, April 17th 2007, Burnaby’s Empty Bowls Project will present a fundraising event to help feed the hungry in their community. The event will feature a star-studded roster of some of Burnaby’s top culinary talents.

The grazing event will be held in the Crystal Ballroom of the Hilton Vancouver Metrotown Hotel. Guests will be treated to tasty menu samplings created and prepared by Chef John Garrett of Burnaby’s Horizons Restaurant, Chef Scott Jaeger of The Pear Tree Restaurant, Chef Tong Lim of the Hilton, Chef Jack Kuyer of The Valley Bakery, and Chef Dennis Peckham of The Hart House Restaurant. The evening will feature entertainment by the “Now’s the Time Trio and a silent auction. In addition each guest will take home a beautifully handcrafted ceramic bowl as a memento of the occasion. The Honourary Chair and Master of Ceremonies for the evening will be Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan.

Proceeds from the fundraiser will go to Burnaby’s Food First Committee, a coalition of community service organizations and community volunteers dedicated to actively addressing issues of food security and hunger in Burnaby. The Committee launched the Empty Bowls Project in 1999, with the goals of raising funds to alleviate hunger and increasing awareness of food security and poverty in Burnaby, where the poverty rate is 23%. At Empty Bowls Project events artists, students, community agencies, businesses and community residents work to create solutions to the growing problem. Food-related programs supported by their efforts include school breakfasts, homework and snack programs, family cooking programs, and community kitchens.
