COZIDO A PORTUGUESA

Vancouver, BC . . . Shake off the chill at Senova Restaurant, with cuisine of the sun. Changes in the kitchen see a duo of chefs, Graham Philpott and Grant Hunissett, collaborating to showcase a culinary tour of the Iberian Peninsula. New this winter is a hearty, heritage feature; Cozido a Portuguesa (Portuguese Ragout). As a dish that definitely holds a penchant for the cooler winter months; similar to a French pot au feu, Cozido is a fitting addition to Senova’s already popular winter menu. (Please see new menu attached) Cozido is only available on Wednesday nights, so book early.

The true composition of Cozido is dependent on the chef’s imagination and budget, therefore Senova’s rendition is a rich and full-flavoured stew, laden with house-made sausages including black, flour and chorizo, flank steak, pork, potatoes, carrots, turnips, chickpeas, and cabbage. This common staple’s warmth is in its presentation as an all-in-one dish and is a steal at $28.

And crab is back. Due to popular demand, whole crab has returned to the nightly specials and is featured on Tuesday night. Live crab, steamed and lightly tossed in garlic, ginger, cilantro and white wine, is a perfect starter, or crack your way through dinner, light and delicious.

Home-grown champions accented by traditional flavourings and spices, fills the culinary coffers of Senova Restaurant. Located in Kerrisdale just outside the inner cities madness, the restaurant boasts the Mediterranea cuisine of sun. Arinto fermented in French barriques, Fernão Pires and Vital that’s seen only stainless steel. Fresh nose of bright lemony fruit with a hint of toastiness. The palate is crisp and fresh with good acidity and lovely bright fruit. Very good+ 91/100

Sousão Casa Santos Lima $ 60.
Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa and Tinta Roriz from Estramadura comes the answer to Shiraz, spicy, full body ripe fruit, traditional Port grape blend. Medium tannins with a fair bit of spicy oak. Nice definition and good structure.Very good/excellent 93/100
