THIRSTY THURSDAYS CELEBRATES SUMMER

VanDusen Botanical Garden’
s summer gets off to a tasty start with the first of its summer sipper series, Thirsty Thursdays, on July 12th .

Originally created as part of the Garden’s 30th anniversary celebrations three years ago, these ‘social irrigation’ events have proved a popular way to enjoy a summer evening while unwinding with wine, hors d’oeuvres and music in the Garden’s beautiful Bentall Garden.

The July 12th event, entitled Salud Chile!, celebrates the wine and food of Chile with wines sponsored by the Consulate General of Chile and Stile Wines. Get into the summer mood while sampling vinos from featured wineries Casa del Bosque, Ventisquero, Trio and Carmen. Peake of Catering’s hors d’ouevres perfectly complement with Chilean-inspired tidbits such as Pollo Escab Echado (chicken ceviche-style), Pork Empanaditas and Alcachofas Rellanas Con Atun (artichokes stuffed with tuna and celery salad). The ethereal sounds of Andean music will serenade guests.

California Dreamin’ is the theme of August’s Thirsty Thursday on August 16th. As the name suggests, this event celebrates the food and wine of California featuring wines sponsored by the Napa Valley’s Beringer Vineyards. Kick back to a DJ spinning tunes by the Beach Boys or the Mamas and Papas while enjoying Peake of Catering’s laid-back California cuisine. Highlights include Emperor Grapes rolled in California Goat’s Cheese and Coconut, Crepe Coronets with BBQ Duck and Enoki Mushrooms and Girardelli Chocolate Chicken Pinwheels.

Starting at 5:30 p.m. and running to 8 p.m., Thirsty Thursdays are a wonderful way to get an early start on the weekend. Ticket price includes admission to the Garden, entertainment and nibbles. There is a No Host Bar. Priced at $25 per person, tickets must be purchased in advance (sorry, tickets are not available at the door) either in person from the Garden Shop or VanDusen Administration Office or by phone at 604.257.8666.

Funds raised from Thirsty Thursdays help to grow VanDusen Botanical Garden Association, a registered non-profit charity. For more information on VanDusen Botanical Garden and its activities, visit their web site at www.vandusengarden.org
