PAUL SMOLEN HONOURED BY PREMIER CAMPBELL FOR SUPPORTING SPECIAL OLYMPICS

On May 31st 2007, the Hart to Heart Croquet Tournament presented by the Hart House at Deer Lake in Burnaby was inducted into the Special Olympics BC Hall of Fame for charity work on behalf of Special Olympics. The induction took take place at a special reception attended by Californian Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Premier Gordon Campbell presented the award to Paul Smolen, General Manager of Hart House, and Joan Hess, Hart to Heart Croquet Tournament committee member.

Hart House has long been a supporter of Special Olympics. For each of the past nineteen years it has mounted a fundraising event called the Hart to Heart Croquet Tournament. Special Olympics BC has been the beneficiary of the event since 1995. The Hart to Heart Tournament has to date raised more than $550,000 to support the work of Special Olympics BC. Dedicated to providing high-quality sports programs and competitions for individuals with intellectual disabilities, Special Olympics BC serves more than 3,500 athletes in 51 communities around British Columbia.

On May 31st Arnold Schwarzenegger attended a Special Olympics BC Sponsor and Athlete Summit where the Hall of Fame induction took place. Schwarzenegger’s wife, Maria Shriver, has a personal connection to the organization. Maria Shriver’s mother, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, is the honorary chairperson of the Special Olympics, and is the Executive Vice President of the Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. Foundation that established the Special Olympics in 1968.

This year’s Hart to Heart Croquet Tournament will be held in on Friday, September 14, 2007. The day will start with a continental breakfast at Hart House, which is well known for its exceptional brunches. A day-long croquet tournament will follow. The game will be played on the elegant grounds of the Hart House estate and will be accompanied by live music. The tournament will stop for a special lunch prepared by Executive Chef Dennis Peckham, who will apply his celebrated culinary skills to create an unforgettable buffet. Play will resume after lunch. Prior to the final match participants will be treated to Pimm’s and a selection of cocktail sandwiches. The dinner that follows will be accompanied by an additional musical guest. Both live and silent auctions will add to the fun!
