Meltdown: Artwork in Chocolate

Do you think the good folks living on Bowen Island may have too much time on their hands? You think they'd be like the rest of us and just be happy to eat their chocolate – before the trick ‘er treaters can get their little mitts on any of it.

But no, Bowen resident, the Master Chocolatier and owner of Cocoa West, Carlos Vela-Martinez, and 12 of his fellow artists have dreamed up a show of fantastic sculptural artworks … all of it made entirely from chocolate.

Says Vela-Martinez: “These are artists with diverse experience and expertise - but most have never worked with chocolate before! However, they were given a crash-course on how to work with this sensuous but technically difficult medium, and it allowed them to realize their own vision in one of the world's favourite culinary indulgences. The result - twelve artists producing artwork that expands the boundaries of how we consider chocolate and celebrates this familiar but exotic food-as-medium. Through their sculpture, silk-screen, video, carving, installation work, we see how chocolate can be redefined in its form and cultural meaning."

Hmmmm….wonder if they got to lick the beaters?

The show, entitled Meltdown:Artwork in Chocolate, is sponsored by Bowen Island's Cocoa West Chocolatier, the chocolate cafe that specializes in organic artisan truffles, and features a menu of certified organic hot chocolates. Artists include: Peg Campbell, Ian Fry, Saffron Guerny & Amy Andrews, Sarah Haxby, Heidi Hudspith, Kari Killy, Kelly Miller, Joanne Mogridge, Tiffanee Scorer and Calder Stewart.

You’ll find Meltdown at the Gallery at Artisan Square on Bowen Island, running from Oct. 27 through Nov. 19. The opening reception, with artists in attendance, is at 1pm on Sunday Oct. 29. Not so far away -- the 12:00 ferry from Horseshoe Bay is a convenient 20 minute sailing.
