(1) SLOW BONES (left)
Diana Smith, 3rd Yr. Visual Arts

Using napkin rings encourages us to make even the simplest meal a celebration and underscore the tenets of the Slow Food Movement. These napkin rings reference the spine, reminding us of the connection between healthy eating and strong bones.

Jennifer Stamper-Steffen, 2nd Yr. General Fine Arts
Brass

Standing over five feet tall Stamper-Steffen’s Asparagus is a celebration of food. Simultaneously it looks ahead at the prospect of engineered foods to come.

(4) LIQUIDATION
Cameron MacDonald, 3rd Year Visual Arts
Mixed media, variable dimensions

Addressing issues of food security, over fishing and globalization, MacDonald’s work imagines a world where the commercial fisheries have completely collapsed and greedy corporations have caught, canned, and now offer for sale all that remains in the sea. The products depict real fish and real contaminants; the brand names, company names and corporations, as well as the quantities of contaminants are fabricated.

(5) FRUITHEAD
David Mook, 4th Yr. General Fine Arts
Medium Format Photography

Fruitheads references Mook’s belief that he is often judged by his sexual orientation, by being what some may call a ‘fruit’. Fruitheads also addresses other issues surrounding the politics of food. As exemplified by a pineapple, it questions the logic behind shipping food across the world, supports the apple as a healthy local choice, and exposes the banana as something that some may consider endangered.

(6) FOOD WARS, SERIES #1-12
Pierre Leichner, ’07 Alumni, General Fine Arts
Digital Photographs

Recognizing food as a battleground within his professional life as a psychiatrist working with those suffering from Eating Disorders, through to battles being waged over issues such as fast foods vs. slow foods, organic vs. conventional, genetic modification and the politics of food control vs. food democracy, Leichner’s vividly coloured photographs seduce viewers into this discourse.
