SEASONAL BEER

AULD NICK WINTER ALE IS COMING TO TOWN
(Edited from the press release.)

For the holiday season, R&B Brewing Company has brought back their limited release seasonal winter ale “Auld Nick,. The Auld Nick Winter Ale is brewed in the tradition of a Scottish Wee Heavy; mellow and warming with a smooth finish. This strong dark winter ale is the perfect antidote to the cold rainy nights of fall and winter. This skillfully crafted and well-balanced strong ale boasts a rich, malty flavour made from a combination of specialty malts and traditional hops from Kent England.

R&B Brewing Co. has produced sixty cases of 650mL bottles of the seasonal ale, which are available at select BC Liquor Distribution and Cold Beer and Wine Stores in Vancouver B.C. The strong dark ale will be available on draft during the months of November and December at fine restaurants including Central Bistro, The Railway Club, Boneta, Aqua Riva, Waazubees, Habit and Zin Restaurant & Lounge, with a special cask tapping at Zin, November 29th and at The Whip Gallery, December 9th.

Try the Auld Nick at the Fondue Beer Dinner at Zin Restaurant and Lounge on November 29, 2007. See menu here.

Finishing in second place was Joe Fortes' own Oyster Bob Skinner, with a time of 2:04. Returning champion Ian Peck, also of Joe Fortes fame, walked away with the "Best Presentation" award. "Best Year Ever For Cornucopia" trumpets Tourism Whistler.

GETTING A CORONET FULL - CORNUCOPIA GOSSIP

Another Celebration of Food and Wine at Whistler Resort has come and gone, eleven of them so far, and perhaps our perception of it was off, but this year’s Cornucopia festival seemed quieter and not as well attended as it has been in the past. Although adding an extra day in which to spread out the events may have helped to create that impression.

No doubt Tourism Whistler will put a success spin on the attendance statistics, but if the numbers were down it would be due to a number of factors beyond their control. The weaker US dollar would be only the most obvious, but other contributing factors could include: the passport requirement for border crossers, novelty fatigue, increased competition from other events in Vancouver, and last but not least, the cancellation of the raunchy Masquerave party annually hosted by Whistler's Bearfoot Bistro. Citing licensing problems -- as in, they wouldn't give him one -- Bearfoot proprietor Andre St. Jacques not only removed his highly anticipated event from the Cornucopia roster, he also went so far as to close the restaurant for the duration – largely we presume, so as not to have to deal with industry types who might have tried to congregate in the place and revive the action with or without a license.

Many of the weekend's attendees, primarily non-industry types who were actually there for the wines, couldn’t have given a synthetic cork over one less party-animal magnet in the village. No so however, a fair number of the industry's workers, not to mention some of the younger locals (think Britney clones), who did feel deeply deprived by its loss. So much so that at one luncheon, a number of them showed up wearing “Bring Back the Masquerave t-shirts. (See photo above). ...CONTINUE READING.

FOOD AND CULTURE
A FLY IN THE MICROWAVE: Fun on the Farm When No One's Around

by Roy Mackay (2007, Self-Published)

Is this comfort food or is it a form of artistic expression?

Think what you like, but metal sculptor Ray Mackey seems to believe that a first step towards living a free life in an unfree world comes when you unfetter yourself from standard expectations regarding suitable spreads for your breakfast toast.

This photo of "Mexican Toast" comes from an entry on his blog entitled "Delicious Low Fat Sandwiches" and its simple formula of cayenne pepper, ketchup, cottage cheese and peanut butter on Wonder bread, although unorthodox, is a refreshingly innocent journey to a landscape outside the culinary lines. Indeed, only your kids could likely come up with something so economically creative or so joyously revolting. (That is, unless you are old enough to remember Kraft Theatre recipes.) ...
