GOTTA DO THE OKIE-POKEY!!

As much as we hate to leave home sweet home, especially on a Feast of Fields weekend, the lure of the Okanagan is just too strong.

We'll be back soon with tales and photos from

The Okanagan Book party at Joie for Heidi Noble's Menus from an Orchard Kitchen
The Screening of Craig Noble's new documentary Film Tableland
A visit to the Penticton Farmers Market
Who's dancing with who at the 4th Annual Naramata Tailgate Party
the Pentastic Hot Jazz Festival
and a fabulous meal catered by Joy Road Catering on God's Mountain.

Ooops our plane is leaving.... no time now to make links, but we'll update soon!!

WINE OF THE WEEK
"MAD ANGIE"

Are rosés the white shoes of the wine world? You're not supposed to drink them after Labour Day Weekend?

Phoeey on that. In private, we'll keep on drinking rose until Valentines Day when they will become "appropriate" again. (And probably straight through V-Day too, but nevermind, that's another story.)

For the sake of convention, we'll put the pink bottles back under the sink and concentrate instead on another favourite category, wines from obscure little BC wineries.

Now that Fall is coming up fast, and along with it the usual big crop of wine festivals (among them the BC Chef Meets BC Grape event on the 20th), it seems fitting that we start with this exuberant little wine whose label best expresses that kind of crazed feeling that you tend to get this time of year when you know the good weather won't last and you still haven't "done" summer yet. Or maybe they actually mean to market this wine to that dangerous demographic of women who are most likely to dump secure jobs and colourless marriages to ride away with their kids' guitar teacher on the back of a Harley.

TICKET GIVE AWAY!!!

The good news is that the weather looks like it's going to be spectacular for this weekend's Vancouver Mainland Feast of Fields event (taking place this year at UBC Farms).

The bad news (not for them of course), is that the event is now sold out, so if you didn't snap up a ticket already you are out of luck.

But here's where all the hours you've wasted on the company time reading this website could pay off. As an official sponsor for Feast of Fields we have two tickets to give away (Value $150).

Both will go to one name drawn from the first ten people who can tell us "what was on the cover of the first CityFood magazine published in Summer 1992". (Hint: the answer is somewhere on this site.)

Please email your response to contact (at) cityfood (dot) com. No telephone calls please. And be sure to include your name, phone number, and return email address.

NEW PRODUCT
YERBA MATE LATTE

Yerba Mate, the tea-like drink from South America, is not exactly a brand new thing on the health food scene, but it's the first time that Capers Markets will be offering it in the form of a latte in their coffee bars.

They launch the product in their stores today, and considering the popularity with their customers for green tea lattes, this version has the potential to be an equally big hit.

Like green tea, the beverage is a great replacement for coffee, in that it puts a hitch in your step without the accompanying jitters, or that tar pit sensation you'll feel in your stomach from indulging in too much java. Plus it's organic (made with organic milk, organic soy milk, or organic rice milk), and touted as healthy. As described in the article from the August 2007 issue of Men's Journal, it might even lend a macho, sexy quality that tea (associated with grandmothers and childrens' parties) lacks.

We just like the smoke-y flavour ... kind of like gunpowder tea.

Capers is buying their yerba mate from Guayaki - an organic fair trade brand from the rainforest, and if you'd like more information, the vendor, David Karr, will be at the Living Naturally Fair that Capers will be holding in the parking lot of their Robson Street store on September 15th and 16th.

But if you can't be parted from your matcha tea latte, don't brew, you'll still be able to get that too.

THE MEDIA HOUND
YOUR TYPICAL LOSE-LOSE SITUATION

The Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers sent us this article clipped from the Montreal Gazette (August 31, 2007)

Evironmentalism in the Bag

"Yvon Tremblay thought he had the perfect grocery bag when his packaging firm [received] a shipment of a fake-plastic variety he had ordered from France. With the Quebec government considering a 20-cent tax on disposible plastic bags, he figured the timing couldn't be better. Tremblay's bags are 100-per-cent biodegradable, the new industry eco-standard, made entirely from corn, or corn resin, or non-genetically modified cornstarch. [However,] the Montreal-area big-box stores, including the major grocery chains, that Tremblay's sales team approached, took a look at the bottom line - 15 cents a bag - and said thanks, but no thanks. Plastic bags cost two cents each; plastic-resin compostables are six cents apiece. The big retailers told Tremblay that it would be far simpler for them to let the province impose its 20-cent bag tax on the consumer than to absorb a new 15-cent-per-bag cost themselves."
-- read the whole story here.

So who's running this asylum? Why not give the customers the choice? Would they prefer to pay 15 cents to reimburse the store for an eco-friendly bag, or pay the government a 20 cent tax for a villainous plastic one? Well, gee ... let me think about that one for a minute.

New release! The CityFood Magazine Directory of New Vancouver Restaurants for 2007.

We started this directory as a resource for ourselves - to help us keep track of all the new restaurants that have recently opened in Vancouver, and to monitor which ones we needed to pay a visit to. Then we decided to share all this information with you.

It may not look like it, but the project quickly turned into a daunting task, perhaps the most logistically difficult content we've ever attempted in the 15 years of our publication. At one point during the production process, it seemed like new restaurants were opening daily, and the statistical data about all of them was in a constant state of flux. (The city strike which forced many restaurants to delay their opening until fall, or else speed up their projected timelines, didn't help much either.) However, for what it's worth, this is the most complete picture we could assemble when the editorial was sealed a few weeks ago.

It already needs a few updates, natch, and there are more changes in store that are approaching quickly. So instead of posting the free and downloadable digital version via our website right away, we are going to hold this back for a week or so and let the printed version circulate while we make any necessary adjustments. After that, there will be another way to keep your print copy timely, and we will let you know how that will work after the long weekend.

In the meantime, we hope you find this print edition useful, and if you spot any inaccuracies you will let us know so that we can correct it on the website version.

DINE AND DASH

IT'S ALL IN THE NAME

You may have heard that Dennis Green, John Bishop's long time chef at the highly regarded Bishop's, has stepped back from the stoves at the Kitsilano restaurant, and that Chef Andrea Carlson (of Raincity Grill) has taken his place.

But what will Green be doing now?

As told to Judith Lane, he intends to spend the free time he never had before to develop a number of personal projects, one of them being a website and blog. Check it out at www.greenchef.ca
