BIG PRESS FOR VANCOUVER

At CityFood Online we've always welcomed a large number of viewers from Britain, but earlier this week, the numbers logging onto the site from the Mother Country jumped off the graph -- and not just from England, but also from other major cities in Europe, the USA, and Asia. We assumed that a publication or blog with a large following must have linked to us but we couldn't track it down to a specific source (the trail ended in a number), until sharp-eyed Shelley McArthur of Top Table Group noticed the link to CityFood in a feature article about Vancouver in The Times. Thanks Shelley!

In Canada's New Food Frontier, writer Nick Wyke tours about the province via the Rocky Mountaineer train, visits several locations and seems suitably impressed with it all.

Vancouver – the city, the island and nearby food-producing
areas – has long been one of the world’s best kept food secrets.
A blend of Asian influences with classical European techniques
inspired the Chicago Tribune to declare as long ago as 2004 that
"Vancouver’s culinary reputation ranks among gastronomic giants
such as New York, London and Tokyo. It has not dimmed. ...

But then we already knew all that, didn't we? Nice to know that others are discovering "our secret". Wyke credits the Vancouver Cooks book and CityFood Magazine as prime sources for information about the culinary scene in the city. (Glad to have helped.)

Unfortunately, Masa Shiroki, Granville Island's resident saki maker, seems to have suffered a sex change operation in the portrait, but we assume the writer was confusing Mrs. Shiroki for her husband. Masa must be keeping her barefoot and in the saki kitchen.

MORE PRESS FOR VANCOUVER

The Economist has rated Vancouver as the most liveable city in the world.

"With low crime, little threat from instability or terrorism and a highly developed transport and communications infrastructure, Canada and Australia are home to the most liveable destinations in the world. Four of the ten most liveable cities surveyed by the Economist Intelligence Unit are in Australia, and two of the top five are Canadian. Vancouver is the most attractive destination, with a liveability index of just 1.3%"

Obviously they didn't survey the people living on Arbutus about the liveability of the transport infrastructure part.

Now all we need is more trained restaurant staff and we can all retire in bliss.

P.S. Our editor says she's now going to have to get a life. Not having one in the world's most liveable city is embarrassingly inept.

THE MEDIA HOUND

Alexandra Gill reports from her seat at last Sunday's Chefs Outstanding in the Field, an alfresco luncheon catered by Chef David Hawksworth of West that was the only one of the North American series held in Canada.

"Outstanding in the Field may be fading slightly as it basks in its commercial success and good fortune. But the magic of this excellent meal still isn't one that most guests are likely to ever forget."

Roving 'locavore' feast takes it back to the land (Globe and Mail - August 22, 2007)

Fiona Morrow gets Vancouver restaurateurs to comment on the rate of staff poaching now that the competition for good employees is heating up. It's a juicy little read, although we're not sure we believe Rob Feenie's complaint about Boneta trying to pinch Lumiere's dishwasher over a coffee at the White Spot. From what we hear, the Lumiere dishwasher already makes more than all the Boneta boys combined. But then Rob Feenie wants the folks out in the burbs to believe he actually hangs out and cooks at the White Spot, so we suppose the public is expected to swallow anything.

PINK OF THE WEEK

SOFIA ROSE
Carneros California, 2005

Pretty in Pink. As opposed to all the cartoon-ish labels lining the wine store shelves, screaming to get noticed and hustling for your dollar, the Sofia is a breath of fresh air. Like the mini sparkling Sofia in the fuchsia tin can and its bottled, pink, cello-wrapped sister, the Sofia Blanc de Blanc, this rose is unique and oh-so-very girly.

So why wouldn’t we fall in love with this pretty bottle and want to sample it? ... To continue reading, click here.

FEAST OF FIELDS - SEA TO SKY

Another summer weekend has come and gone and the last one presented as many events as seeds on a strawberry. We made it up to Whistler for the Whistler/Pemberton version of Feast of Fields, an annual fundraiser for the Farm Folk/City Folk organization. Thanks to the rain, attendance was a little down from last year (which to compare the weather was a bake off in 2006). That was a bit of a shame, because despite the drizzle and mosquitos the size of helicopters, there was much to enjoy, not the least of it being the venue itself - Pemberton's North Arm Farm with its glorious vistas of mist-veiled mountain ranges and lush, green fields of produce. The setting is by far the most beautiful of any Feast of Field event, and that includes those held on Vancouver island and in Ontario. ...
