One last fireworks evening left on this long BC Holiday weekend, and if we had a patio with a view from which to enjoy the show, this is the pink we'd drink to add to the sparkle.

Made from Pinot Noir and Merlot, this lightly sparkling juice has received just enough grape skin contact to give it an appealing cranberry-soda hue. Its voluptuous bubbles meander up the glass to the surface releasing the fragrance of spiced red berries and chalky minerality. The flavours are slightly off-dry showing candied strawberry, dried cranberry, tangy citrus peel and tobacco on the finish. It’s refreshing and crisp enough for sipping yet has the power to hold its own with salmon, cured meats, mushroom risotto or Italian cheeses. ... TO CONTINUE READING CLICK HERE.

CHEF MURRAY BANCROFT AND EDIBLE BC HELP YOU TO EAT LOCAL

We wondered what Chef Murray Bancroft must have been up to in order to set off our buzz metre this morning, and this must be it…he’s launching a new line of products this weekend at the Edible BC store on Granville Island.

The new company called EAT LOCAL will produce fresh, ready-to-eat sandwiches and salads each day. These items will feature many local ingredients, such as farm fresh arugula, local brie, Oyama meats, Okanagan apples, Fraser Valley hazelnuts and more. All sandwiches and salads will be made each morning and delivered to Edible BC. All sandwiches that are left over at the end of the day will be donated to the Vancouver Food Bank.

If you are at Granville Island this weekend then be sure to check out the 10 – 50% off sale that Edible BC will be holding in honour of BC day. The sale is only for 3 days, so don’t miss it. They’re open from 9am to 7pm and are located at 565 - 1689 Johnston Street in the heart of the public market on the east wall next to South China Seas and the Stock Market.

DINE AND DASH

The West End's newest sports bar, Score, will open in a few days at 1262 Davie -- the space once inhabited by Sugar Daddy's. They're claiming the place will boast "amazing gastro pub style food" Let's hope they understand that "gastro pub" doesn't mean burger platters and Cajun chicken wings. The name of the restaurant does not encourage one to hope for better, but at least they didn't say "awesome".

Cafe Ami at 12th and Oak has been closed for renovation -- hopefully it wasn't for "renovation" -- and will reopen at the end of this week. Don't be surprised if the person at the next table is wearing naught but a blue tissue frock because the cafe is located on the main floor of the Vancouver General Hospital.

You can laugh. A few weeks ago I spotted a barefooted First Nations woman strolling across the Seymour and West Georgia intersection, wearing nothing but a paper examination smock and rolling the IV bottle stand she was hooked up to along with her. She was heading down to Gastown for a beer. We told you the place was hot! The weird thing was that not one pedestrian walking down the sidewalk along side her was giving her a second glance. I figured someone must have been shooting a scene from a movie, but if they were, the cameras were completely out of sight.

So where are those red-uniformed, city hospitality dorks whenever it looks like one might actually be useful?

THE MEDIA HOUND

Alexandra Gill , restaurant reviewer for the Globe & Mail, takes a meat mallet to Metro, calling her meal "brutishly awful".

"Meat Happy Bistro Doles out a Raw Deal: Too many options and too short cooking time make small-plate eatery's flag-waving menu hard to swallow. "

Uh,oh. Chef Brian Fowke's fan club at E-gullet must be screaming like a flock of angry seagulls by now, and we guess Fowke's little gambit of calling Gill "attractive" didn't soften her up any. But what's that old saying about no publicity is bad publicity? Now everyone will want to storm Metro to see if it could possibly be that bad, and most will have a mandate to be a contrarian.

The only trouble is, they'll have to find the place first.

SOLLY'S @ NIGHT

And you thought unwinding one of their famous cinnamon buns was a party. Wait till you hear what's rolling now at Solly's Bagels.

Owner/Manager Solly Markovitch is bringing a whole new concept to his family's popular Jewish bakery at Yukon and 7th. Calling it Solly's @ Night, he's built a stage into the venue and wired in a serious sound system, all the better to introduce live jazz music, dj's, and comedians to rock the place every Thursday, Friday and Saturday Night.

Accompanying the full liquor license will be a "Jewish Tapas Menu" featuring ... TO CONTINUE READING CLICK HERE.

TODAY'S PRESS RELEASES

Someone obviously went fishing for a good idea, but it's a wonder that Victoria, the epicenter in Canada for fish and chips, and also a leader in the country's eco consciousness didn't think up this idea in the first place.
Introducing Red Fish, Blue Fish, a new green-styled seafood shack by an ex Go Fish employee. Gordon Martin's ex public relations firm, Alexander Inc is handling the PR for the project.

Holy Cheese! Synchonize your time pieces, Les Amis du Fromage are having a 10 percent off sale for anything in their store of Swiss origin. They also have some more cheese classes coming up. We'll have them listed in the calendar later.

TWO WEST COAST MENUS FOR AUGUST

Just in time for BC month (August), two Yaletown restaurants have come up with special week-long menus that celebrate the cuisine of our Canadian west coast. With the exception of one visiting California wine, and a salmon that swam down from Alaska to join the party, both menus feature foods and wines that are 100 percent local.

See the menus here for COAST and Glowbal Grill & Satay Bar.
