Wine Picks for Summer - Monetta il Rose

SUMMER WINES - OUR PICK OF THE ROSES

MONETTO IL ROSE´
Veneto, Italy

From the top of its jaunty pink crown cap to the base of its frosted bowling pin-shaped bottom, the IL Rosé sparkling says “drink me!

Fresh, fruity and full of sass, it’s the perfect summer sipping combination of pink, bubbly and low alcohol -- ideal for when you want to do nothing more than while away sunny afternoons under A patio umbrella.

A glorious watermelon-cranberry colour infused with the fragrance of summer flowers, juicy red berries and melon with a pinch of white pepper, Il Rosé is just bubbly enough to tickle your tastebuds and yet is sufficiently dry, showing cherry pit, dried berries and crisp citrus rind flavours. This pretty sipper is made from a blend of the Merlot, Cabernet and Raboso grape varietals and will pair well with a variety of appetizers, cheese or shellfish

Price: $17.99 (+231803) at Private Wine Stores
Agent: Stile Wines

TODAY'S PRESS RELEASES

Remember the Mad about Food store that used to be on West 4th Ave (we think in the space that Aphrodite Pies now occupies). Well, they are back with a new retail outlet on West 3rd ave, that little expanding food centric area that now includes Barbara-jo's Books to Cooks, le amis du Fromage, and Quince. They hold their opening party on June 21st.

Thirsty Thursdays at Van Dusen Gardens is back for the summer with a line up that celebrates Chile and California.

The Feast of Fields at Whistler is back for their second annual event this August, and this time, the focus will be on the 100 Mile Diet concept of eating.

THE MEDIA HOUND

The Outside World - New for the silly season.

So what ever happened to Tyler Brule? After selling his highly successful magazine, Wallpaper, to the big money and editing that for a couple of years, he slipped off to work as a magazine consultant, but otherwise kept a low profile. However he came back on the publishing scene this spring with a new venue called Monocle. "A magazine with a mission to appeal to successful professionals who travel widely and divide their time between several cities." People kind of like ... himself. So far Monocle has printed four issues, each with over 250 pages of hi-grade, glossy stock, each one highlighting new concepts that claim to celebrate style, but at the end of the day may just be simple exercises in overthink. Like this collaboration between a German post modernist architect and a Los Angeles cupcake franchiser. Designing Sprinkles Cupcakes.

Quote from a blogger attending the Food & Wine Classic in Aspen: "[some people] have a lot of money. One woman paid $37,000 so she and her daughter could be Bobby Flay's sous chefs for 20 minutes during the Sunday morning cookoff. The money went to charity, but still..."

What's the going rate for a date with a chef these days? If you go by the recent charity auction held recently in New York when the French Culinary Institute pimped the local celeb chefs for cash bids, it's between $1,000 and $6,100. But to raise those dollars the chefs (all of them male) were forced to parade up and down a public runway while the auctioneer bleated out their appraised value over a microphone. Which goes to show that New York chefs either have egos of cast iron or are a group of damn good sports. The public humilation involved may not have been the end of it. Apparently only half the bidders were female.

Sablefish. Remember the time if you said that to an American you would get a blank look and then you'd have to qualify it with "It's the same thing as Alaska Black Cod." We may not have to do that any more because it seems that the Americans have suddenly started taking to calling the fish "Alaskan Sablefish". Like in this review of the Seattle-style restaurant in New York, Wild Salmon. This is even stranger when you consider that many New Yorkers think of sablefish as a smoked deli fish that is similar to a kipper and served mostly at brunch with eggs.

Julia Child was not the only woman to discover the joys of cooking late in life, so too did Lee Miller, the famous wartime photographer and muse to the surrealists, only Miller was a lot more overtly kinky about it. -- Culinary Surrealist.

THINGS YOU DON'T HAVE YET

Suck My Bic

What can you say about a food shop that calls itself "Stinky"?

Who let the dogs out?

Giddyup! and round up them dust bunnies.

Are those naked stainless steel stoves so over now?

We think this site is about cocktail flavoured gum, but not being able to read Finnish, perhaps we will never know for sure. One thing for sure, a name like "Enemy of Suck" gives you something to chew on.
