Holy Cow! Keller was a Cattle Boy.

In the photo: Who's the skinny guy at the end of his rope?
Last week we profiled Colleen McClean, the chef at Rare One restaurant. Now we steer you to some true cow pie about her boss, Rare owner, Tim Keller. Vancouver Restaurateur Tim Keller Thanks 4HBy Tim Keller, as told to Cloverleaf Country
Now you may not want to hear this from someone who is pushing 40, but my 4H memories are vivid. When I was a teenager I had no idea how 4H could help me, but 25 years later, and from a business point of view, the things I learned at a young age set the foundation for everything I have done and continue to do in my professional life. 4H taught me the responsibilities of what a project entailed. For me, it was cattle. Let me back up for a minute. I was a farm boy ... CONTINUE READING . Barbara Jo's Books to Cooks hosts an evening for Trevor White, Ireland's most notorious restaurant critic and the author of the new book Kitchen Con at the oyster bar at So.Cial at Le Magasin. Kenji Hodgson, a wine columnist for the Province, has joined Joie in Naramata as their assistant winemaker, just as the new Moscato and Gewurztraminer grapevines are being planted. And on today's soap box stand - a meeting tomorrow to discuss an important land use proposal for Richmond. ____________________________________________________________ THE MEDIA DOG
The Outside World
Checkout lines monitored by thermal imaging, rotisserie chickens twirling like tops, a virtual supermarket on the fantasy website, Second Life - it's all in our future thanks to the wonders of food technology. ( Lower Hudson Online). In the Spring issue of CityFood, under "restaurant trends" (page 19) we talked about the trend of "false fronting" or how restaurants are learning to take advantage of the media's competitive habit of reviewing restaurants within mere days of their openings (and sometimes even before they are opened.) In the weekend Independent, food writer Terry Durack reports on how the practice is becoming common place in London and what happened when he waited a few weeks to review Gordon Ramsey's latest gastropub. What he found did not fulfill the promise of the restaurant's early reviews to say the least. So, to what extent is opening day propping for the media resulting in disappointment for the dining public at our local level? One might as well ask why the much touted single-animal deli and butcher shop of So.cial is still curtained off and being used as a storage room. We think it's time for media to start making repeat visits, especially to some of the dining rooms that received the most immediate ink a few months ago. Let's see if reality is living up to the hype. ____________________________________________________________ WHO'S GOT IT - OUR BUZZ METER For May 18, 2007 (The most requested information on the site as measured by Google keyword counter)See the list of the Top Ten Buzz Makers for April 2007PEOPLE: 1) Jeremy Roncoroni (Restaurant Consultant) 2) Dennis Peckham (Chef) 3) Sean Cousins (Chef) 4) Derek Archer (Chef) 5) Quang Dang (Chef)
