They Played a Good Game, eh?

Another restaurant award season in British Columbia has come and gone, and for those “who like to watch� it can be a most amusing time of year – when the carefully PR-polished veneer of the food services industry cracks under the pressure of its collective subliminal ego and any variety of bad gases can escape into the atmosphere: fatal slips of the tongue, transparent agendas, raw emotion, jealousy, thwarted ambitions, pride, justification and the self-inflicted mortifications of the acceptance speech.

Monday night saw the third go round for the Annual Restaurant Hall of Fame Awards. As Awards go, this one may not be as commercially useful as that other Restaurant Award but the mere fact that it is a recognition bestowed upon members of the restaurant industry by their own peer group gives it so much more personal significance for the inductees. Jack Evrensel of Top Table Group even came right out and said so, in the opening line of his speech while accepting his recognition as “an exceptional restaurateur who is currently active in the BC Restaurant industry�. As Evrensel is respected as man never known to waste words on self-serving rhetoric, he made the point more significant for everyone else as well.
