WHEN THE STARS COME OUT ... FOR BREAKFAST

A One Minute interview with...

BARB FOSTER
OWNER: SIMPLY DIVINE CATERING

If the hipness factor of an eating place is judged by the number of movie actors and celebrities who frequent it, then Barb Foster's catering truck must be the hottest dining spot in town. She doesn't mind the crazy hours, hard work and cramped working conditions that must be endured to make sure the heart throbs, super heroes and wretched villains she feeds every day get their wheat grass shots and whole grain bagels. That's all just part of running a successful business. But don't ask her to sort anyone's M&M's by colour. She has a sense of humour but she's long past being star struck. ... CONTINUE READING ...

DINE AND DASH

Looks like Frank Dibenedetto is close to opening another conversion of one of his Ricky's All Day Grills into a Fatburger. The first downtown Vancouver outlet of the California-based hamburger chain was located on Denman St and this one will be across from the Stadium Skytrain Station at Beatty and Dunsmuir -- a no-brainer positioning considering the venue's proximity to GM place, plus the relative inactivity of the former Ricky's. It's maybe not such good news for our waistlines at CF however. The hazard it poses for us is that it will be located in our own Crosstown neighbourhood and we are going to have to walk past it with our fingers forming the sign of the cross every time we go to the Keefer St. T&T store for lean and healthy greens. Oh well, one cannot exist on diet of either bok choi or Chambar’s cocktails alone.

Here's a link to their help wanted posting. Wonder how many replies they will get with their email spelled incorrectly.

Noticing the high number of searches on the site yesterday for Dirty Laundry Wine we tracked it back to a US trend hunting firm who was looking for a photo of the wine's label to use as an example of the trend for "shocking wine labels". To quote:

"Traditional branding was based on choosing names that exuded the product’s qualities and attributes. Why bother? That’s the attitude of many hot new companies who are choosing shocking titles for their identities. Nowhere is this more pronounced than in the wonderful world of wine. Here, shocking labels like Fat Bastard and now Dirty Laundry, are on the rise. In fact, earlier in the year, we covered a company that had its trademark rejected for branding their wine, Jesus Juice.

ON THE NEWSSTAND TODAY

THE LOCAL INK

Ben
and Suanne the Chowtimes couple always sound like they are having too much fun. Lately they've been cooking up a black jelly from powdered turtles (we don't mean the chocolates), and then they fool around with some chicken flavoured Pho Soup Base.

THE OUTSIDE WORLD

If you are into sake this is your Mecca. This San Francisco store boasts some 190 labels, giving it the largest collection outside of Japan.

How upbeat can frozen yoghurt get? Well, there's Pinkberry, the low-fat (30 calorie per cup) Los Angeles cult dessert that as the slogan says, "has launched a thousand parking tickets".

Starbucks is venturing into the private label record business and rumour has it that Paul McCartney is one of the first music artists to sign up.

What makes a green restaurant really green, according to the Boston Globe

Is that time of year again. Why Coca-cola addicts are running around New York frantically buying up the bottles with the yellow caps.
