BOOZE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE
Just when we've trained ourselves to stop yelling "Hey bartender, gimme a scotch!" when we go out to hydrate our urban anxieties in a socially congenial atmosphere, and have learned to subsititute that salutation for "Excuse, me your Mixologist sir, but may I be permitted a peek at the signature cocktail list?" ... we discover they have moved on to become ... POUR MASTERS. Yes, apparently your favourite drink makers have joined the ranks of the Plate Masters, Tea Masters, Cheese Masters, Managing Editors (also known as God damned Task Masters) and all their other Master-betters.
Take this press release which arrived in the Swamped Box this morning ... CONTINUE READING

DINE AND DASH
What they are saying now:
(On the staffing shortage in Vancouver) "It kind of shocks me how it is these days," said the restaurant owner. "I'm used to a time when the staff would come and ask you if they could have a particular week off. Or at least give you the consideration of having some input into the decision. Now they tell ME what's going down. They've started just leaving notes on the scheduling board that say 'I'll be taking the weekend off so don't book me in.' Sometimes two or three people will do this on a crucial set of days, such as an American long weekend. In the "old" days they wouldn't have had a job to come back to when they returned, but no one is so easily replaceable any more."
