JANET McGUIRE DEALING IN WHEELING

We finally connected yesterday with a happy and relaxed sounding Janet McGuire, who since the closure of her West Vancouver Beachside Cafe, had somewhat fallen off the media radar. Janet has been trying out a new career selling BMWs for the past three months now, and finds the daytime hours and pace a welcome change after many years of coping with the round the clock demands of being a restaurant owner. For her, a big bonus has been the fact that while working in the luxury auto business she keeps running into her former customers at the Beachside, so she is pleased to have been able to maintain that personal connection. Asked if she had any plans to return to the restaurant business, she answered with an emphatic, "Are you kidding?"

The Beachside itself remains closed, windows papered, although the lease was sold a few months ago to a former chef, Gianni Picchi. Picchi had bought the existing fixtures in the restaurant but then tore everything out and completely overhauled the decor, which may have depleted his set up budget. Other sources tell us that Picchi cannot move forward until he finds an investor and that he may also be having difficulties obtaining a liquor license.

We will have to wait and see. In the meantime, the surrounding neighbourhood continues to evolve with a number of new restaurants appearing on the horizon that may be in operation by this summer.

WORK IN THE WINE BIZ

A message from Tim Wispinski of Renaissance Wine Merchants

We have a job opening. The job is full time and a permanent part of our sales team. We offer a very competitive car allowance and pay for all business use gas. The position has a good salary with an annual bonus based on case sales.

I'm looking for someone who is wine savvy and has experience selling into retail accounts - selling to LDB stores would be ideal.

ON THE NEWSSTAND TODAY

THE LOCAL INK

Having mastered the oyster motoyaki, Ben and Suanne try a salmon version. On Chowtimes.

The following is a quote from last weekend's Calgary Herald as reported by the Canadian Independant Grocers Association:

IN-STORE DINING IS THE NEXT BIG THING IN GROCERY STORE SHOPPING.

Grocery stores of all sizes are seeing the sale advantages of establishing in-store dining areas. And those dining areas vary from full-fledged licensed restaurants and licensed bistros to smaller seating areas like a lunch counter. The idea of combining a restaurant with a grocery store [can make] simple economic sense. There is a synergy between the two concepts. Michael Kehoe, a Calgary retail real estate broker, says the trend of grocery stores developing in-store dining areas is an excellent example of how the traditional grocery store is being reinvented. "Alberta grocers are changing the applecart in a ruthless battle for market share across the province," says Kehoe. "Here in Calgary, in-store bistros and casual dining areas are a good fit for lifestyle-focused, time-pressed Calgary consumers with various levels of disposable income. These dining facilities increase dwell time in the store and enhance customer loyalty.

THE OUTSIDE WORLD

Someday you'll pay for those words. In an unusual verdict, a restaurateur wins $25,000 in lieu of damages from a food reviewer's poison pen.

Valentine-less women rejoice and raise your Cosmopolitans. You weren't all that in to him anyway and Sex and the City, the movie, is in the works.

Jancis Robinson reports on the good works done by Wine Relief.
