ANOTHER MAGAZINE WANTS TO "FILL THAT GAP"
(January 28, 2008)

After nearly a year of simmering on the back burner, the Vancouver Sun is finally going to bring out its unimaginatively named Entree, a stand alone, restaurant/food scene magazine.

Last year saw several false starts for the project, all of them cancelled at the gate due to the paper's inability to drum up enough advertising support, thus forcing the time-sensitive editorial content into a fall back position in the weekly food section of the newspaper. However, reports say that the Sun may finally be getting its act together as of next month for the big debut.

Not that it will be calm sailing. Rumours abound that there is still friction aplenty on the editorial side of things too, as freelance columnists resist signing contracts that would give the Sun those infamous "any format, anywhere in the universe rights" for their work.

Well, it will be interesting to see what comes out of it .... or maybe not.

Over on the other side of the country, The Globe and Mail has brought out its "Dine" annual restaurant directory (another dull, obvious name), yet despite the publication's slick 124 pages of hi-gloss shine, the local critics seem less than wowed, declaring it to be a total sell job.

BID TO WIN A FEENIE GENIE
(January 28, 2008)

We are only approaching the end of the first month and already tonight's inaugural fundraising dinner for the BC Hospitality Fund at the Pan Pacific Hotel is turning out to be the industry event of the year.

With an attendance figure approaching 400, like Mrs. Astor's famous ballroom, anyone with standing and influence in the community will be there. Demand for tickets is so high that organizers are trying to fit in a couple of extra tables. Which means that some tickets are still available, and if you are lucky and call 604-861-0728, you might snag one. But be prepared to shell out. At $350 plus tax per ticket, it's not for the faint of budget.

Looks like attendees are going to get their monies' worth though. You can see a menu and a list of some of the sample auction items on our web page here, or go to the Foundation's website at: www.bchospitalityfoundation.com.

Most of the auction items are really over the top and one particular item caught our eye ... For anyone who has been dying to corner Rob Feenie and interrogate him on his future plans etc., here's your best opportunity.

Up for grabs is a “Day in the Life with Rob Feenie
