1) July 7th SummerFest Market Festival!
What: the UBC Farm Market - selling local, organically-grown produce from Vancouver's only remaining working farm
When: 9:00 am - 1:00 pm, every Saturday through October
Where: at the UBC Farm, 6182 South Campus Road (see
http://www.landfood.ubc.ca/ubcfarm/contact.php for directions)
The sun is out, and it finally feels like summer - just in time for
SummerFest, our first market festival of the season! Join us this Saturday for a market with a little something extra - facepainting for the young (or young at heart!), bee hive tours, and a nature walk around the farm where you'll identify birds and native plants. The hive tours and nature walk will first start around 10:00, with subsequent tours to be held thereafter.
We'll also have a visit from '
Madame Beespeaker' & the Beespeaking Project. The Beespeaking Project, put on by
Lori Weidenhammer, is a family-oriented conversational piece, using a lost folk tradition to create a dialogue in the community about our relationship to bees and the environment, and what people can do to protect our disappearing bees. Lori encourages everyone to check out her website:
http://www.absolutevalueofnoise.ca/UTOPIA/2006_BEES/.
With all the activities going on, don't forget the stars of the market - fresh, local produce! This is the last week for those tasty garlic scapes, an early-season specialty, so don't miss out. Also, we'll have lots more of our best-selling salad mix - can't get enough of those greens! The first UBC Farm kale and cabbage will be making an appearance, and although the end of strawberry season is drawing near, we're picking right up with offerings of the first crop of BC cherries from the Similkameen Valley. They are so tasty!
Also, it's not too late to get those tomato plants into the ground - we'll be having a sale on all tomato transplants (started from seed by farm staff and volunteers) - $1.00 or less! We have many different varieties, and most of them can even be grown in large pots. So bring a little of the UBC Farm home to your own garden. Lastly, thanks to everyone for your feedback on the proposed UBC Farm organic canvas bags. We had a very positive response, so look for these bags to show up at the market in a few weeks!
