It's Moving Day!
WE'VE MOVED CITYFOOD CAN NOW BE FOUND BACK AT ITS ORIGINAL URRL OF WWW.CITYFOOD.COM
This area is now a holding archive for the previous version of the website.
___________________________________________
Yes, after almost three years with CityFood Online Version 2, we are getting ready to move from these cramped quarters to a third and larger site. You will notice that the new site retains much of the same overall look and organization (such purely design elements such as switching to a white background was tempting, yet we were concerned about looking like so many other websites). Thus, many of the changes may not be apparent at first, however they will allow for increased functionality in the way of video, sound, commentary boxes, archiving, as well as several other experimental features that are still under wraps. Please feel free to send your comments, suggestions or requests to contact@cityfood.com. We will be keeping material running parallel on both sites for a few more days and will not make the full transition until we are certain that any tech glitches or viewing problems have been worked out. It has been amazing to watch the steady climb in traffic for our print magazine's companion website, not only from the local audience, but as British Columbia prepares to move into a spotlight on the world's stage, from a growing international viewership as well. For that we are most grateful and want to thank all of you for your continued and most valued support. Best regards, Rhonda May Editor - CityFood Magazine and CityFood Online

WINE NEWS - ( September 16, 2009) SAKEMAKER READY TO HARVEST FIRST SAKE RICE IN BC( Directly from the press release.) Masa Shiroki, owner and sake maker at Artisan SakeMaker on Granville Island is excited to announce that his experimental crop of sake rice (sakamai), planted on a small plot in Ashcroft in May this year, will be ready for harvest on or around September 20. Not satisfied with making his award-winning sakes only from imported rice from Japan, Shiroki began, several years ago, to research the possibility of cultivating sake rice in British Columbia. “Since I started Artisan SakeMaker, the ultimate goal has always been to eventually grow sakamai in BC or, if necessary, elsewhere in Canada, so I can use the rice crop to make truly Canadian sake,” Masa claimed. “So I’m really happy that we’ve completed the first small but important step. We’ve proved that sake rice can be successfully grown in BC. Now we just have to grow enough to make my wine.” ... CONTINUE READING... FOOD: SANDWICH SERIES ( September 3, 2009) THE CEMITA OF MEXICO The new Las Tortas on Cambie Street (located between 17 and 18th), manages to hits two tamale trains with one stone. First, it's part of the improving options for casual Latin food in Vancouver, and second, it's right on time for the renewed popularity of the mega-size sandwich. At Las Tortas, the featured item is pretty much an authentic take on the kind of everyday street food that Mexicans (especially office workers in Mexico City) custom order on a regular basis from small, street side, hole-in-the-wall restaurants and public market places. However even in Mexico, there are tortas and there are super-tortas. The best example of the later being the Cemita, a traditional sandwich that is a specialty of the central Mexican towns of Puebla and Cholula. ... CONTINUE READING... CF TRAVEL - ( August 31, 2009) I ate a bug ... and I liked it. Hola! If you wonder where we have been for the last couple of weeks ... the truth is, we couldn't resist the invitation to run away and experience the cuisine and culture of Central and Eastern Mexico: Mexico City, Hidalgo, Tlaxcala, Veracruz, Puebla and Oaxaca. It was a trip that was so packed with culinary adventure that there was little time to sleep, let alone find a plug in for a website update. But holy mole has our appreciation and knowledge of regional Mexican cooking been taken to another level. And yes... we ate grasshoppers, beetles, worms and even rat ... all in the line of duty. The complete story will appear in a future issue of WestWorld Magazine and several highlights will be posted in this website under REGIONAL: CF Travel/Mexico. But for now, it's time to catch up with our own fabulous food resources here on Canada's westcoast. Filed in REGIONAL/CF Travel - Mexico

RESTAURANTS - ( August 11, 2009) CAMPAGNOLO RESTAURANT USES STREET TACTICS That's some POST-it note. We noticed these signs tacked to the telephone poles in our neighbourhood, advising pedestrians that Campagnolo restaurant (1020 Main Street) was only 7 blocks away. Well, if you count the entire length of the Cambie St bridge or the Georgia Viaduct as a "block" then they were probably right. We'd say they're using their street smarts. But where were the little pull off tabs for percentage discounts? Walk-in customer mystery prizes (free cappuccino with your meal?) would be fun. They could be getting more mileage from this good idea. Filed in RESTAURANTS/Restaurant News.

ANNOUNCEMENTS - (August 7, 2009) IS NEAT THE WALDO OF BRITISH STAR CHEFS? RESTAURANTS/HOTELS/COOKING SCHOOLS West Restaurant : On August 31st, Chef Warren Geraghty will welcome one of his mentors, British Chef Richard Neat, to join him in preparing a special collaborative dinner, and it's an interesting coup for West Restaurant. Neat made his name in the '80s and '90s when as one of the hot new chefs on the European restaurant scene he rocketed to fame as the first British chef to win a Michelin star in France. Considering the culinary chauvinism of the French, that was no mean feat. But since that white hot start, he's been keeping a low profile at a series of exotically located restaurants that could come from an Indiana Jones script: India, Marrakesh and most recently in Costa Rica. Google him and the most frequent question that pops up is: "Where is Richard Neat?" That is, when he is not being alternately referred to as either "brilliant" or "troubled". Here's a recap of his career: ... CONTINUE READING... FOOD FILMS - ( August 6, 2009 ) I PEEKED UNDER JULIA'S PANS As we ALL know by now, the new Julie & Julia movie starts its run in local theaters tomorrow. Primed to be THE chick flick of the year, the advance marketing for the film has been omnipresent and relentless for most of the summer. Which only makes me more ambivalent about whether I want to rush out and see it. As much as I admire the talents of Meryl Streep, I'm afraid that she may try to reinforce Julia's image as that of a big, jolly and cute, if somewhat unusual, matron, when actually the woman was often pretty salty ... right into her nineties. ...
